In 2000 Simone Sommerhalder commenced with his studies with Adriano Mondini at the Conservatorio „Giuseppe Verdi“ in Como, and completed these in 2005 with distinction.
Courses with Maurice Bourgue, Francesco di Rosa, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Luca Vignali and Omar Zoboli helped him improve further.
He received a scholarship from the Jürgen-Ponto-Stiftung (Frankfurt am Main) and the "Interlochen Centre for the Arts" (Michigan, U.S.A.), who awarded him with the "Fine Arts Award" in the subject oboe.
In 2000 in Berlin and in 2003 in Weimar he won the first prize for oboe at the German federation competition "Jugend musiziert" and was the solo finalist at the "Eurovision Young Musicians" competition in 2006. He also performed with the Wiener Symphoniker.
He has performed as soloist in Europe and in the U.S.A., amongst others at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern-Festival, the Schwetzinger Mozartfest, with the Wiener Symphoniker, the Donau-Symphony Orchestra from Budapest, the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the Philharmonic Orchestra from Heidelberg, the Philharmonia Hungarica, the Kammerorchester Basel, the Mährischen Philharmonie Olmütz, the Camerata Bern, the Lucerne Festival Strings and the Zürcher Kammerorchester.
With his young seventeen, Simone Sommerhalder is the youngest member of Claudio Abbado’s "Orchestra Mozart" in Bologna. He is also playing in the "Filarmonica Toscanini" under Lorin Maazel, who invited the high school graduate in 2006 to join his newly founded "Orquesta del Palacio de las Artes" in Valencia as acting solo oboist.
